Could I be right?

Keep your eyes peeled - a common phrase, meaning to watch out for something, using your eyes. Or so you thought. I have a theory.....

In fact, I think this is a vegetable or more specifically, tuber-related phrase. Potatoes have eyes, don't they? And, in theory, if you leave them be, they'll sprout, won't they? So, you need to keep them peeled, otherwise you'll have a whole mess of potatoes in the press. And that's my theory.
