I had a feeling that this would happen. Interest would wane. Subject matter would dwindle. I look around anxiously, willing something to inspire me for today's post. Todays? What about Sunday and Monday! Nah seriously, will one do for the 3 days? I suppose it depends on what I blog about though. Let's see. Hmmmm, music.....games......DVDs......books.......Music it is!
I'm currently listening to Holst's The Planets, in surround sound (Thanks Naxos!) which is really quite good music. It's kinda funny, because you know the Rugby world cup theme, "The world in union" or somesuch is from The Planets. And there I was labouring under the misapprehension that the International Rugby Community had commissioned it as an original piece.
Music is wierd like that, the first version of a song or tune you hear tends to be associated as your personal definitive version, even though somebody might have put a better spin on it from another band or another era. I suppose that's why people familiar with a song are never happy at a cover version, and people hearing cover versions find originals a little bit odd. Well I say people, but I can really only speak for myself. Submit thoughts below, under "comments."
Like the Elvis song, "I can't help falling in love". I'd heard UB40 sing it first and it always sounded funny to me when I heard Elvis sing it! Or "Love is all around" by Wet Wet Wet (Brian watches silently as all of his credibility, little and all as there was of it, slides unstoppably away......) versus the Troggs.
To contradict myself, I should mention the Madonna cover of American Pie. That was quite good in my humble opinion, even though I'd heard Don McLean sing it first. Yes, that does contradict myself. I'm going to end up spending the rest of the evening thinking of cover version and original version couples.
See, you can always think of something to blog about!
Post-script: Should I really press "publish post" with a reference to Wet Wet Wet in my blog? Answers on a postcard please to the Western Sanitorium, Solitary Confinement Wing, Mount Crazyland.
